Most celebrity causes are built around giving money away. Matthew McConaughey and his wife Camila Alves McConaughey built theirs around a less glamorous problem: the money is already there, and the schools that need it cannot get the paperwork done. The Greenlights Grant Initiative, launched in July 2023 through the couple's just keep livin Foundation, exists to close that gap.
The initiative traces directly to Uvalde, Texas, McConaughey's hometown and the site of the 2022 elementary-school shooting. In interviews the couple have described learning that federal money for school safety existed, through the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act signed in June 2022, which included a billion dollars directed at schools, but that many district leaders either did not know about it or found the application process impossible to navigate with the staff they had.
So the Greenlights model is deliberately narrow. Rather than running its own grant fund, the initiative offers school districts free grant-writing assistance and plain-language information about which federal programs they qualify for. The eligible uses of that federal money, according to the program, include mental-health services and school security measures, two categories the McConaugheys frame as complementary rather than competing.
By September 2024, Good Morning America reported concrete early results: of 30 school districts the initiative had worked with, four had secured more than a million dollars in grant funding. Those are modest numbers against the scale of American public education, but they represent money that, by the districts' own account, they would likely not have captured on their own.
The approach is quietly clever because it treats a bureaucratic barrier as the real obstacle. A well-funded grant program does no good if the schools with the greatest need, often the ones with the fewest administrators, cannot afford the time to apply. By donating expertise instead of cash, the initiative multiplies public dollars rather than adding a small private pot to them.
It also sidesteps a trap that catches a lot of celebrity giving, the one-time photo-op donation that generates headlines and then evaporates. Grant-writing help is unglamorous and ongoing; its value shows up in a district's budget two years later, not on a red carpet. McConaughey has been candid that the available funding is limited and that the demand for counselors and security outstrips it.
Readers who want to know whether their own district could benefit, or who want the current count of schools helped and dollars won, should go to the Greenlights Grant Initiative directly. The program's own site is where eligibility, services and up-to-date results are maintained, and is the right place to confirm any figure before relying on it.
